How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

This post contains an affiliate link.  But I only link to things I’ve purchased and love!

Let’s get real about this.  Every hair stylist I’ve ever had has recommended not to wash my hair every day, which usually I can manage.  I actually prefer to wash my hair less, because… I’m lazy.  And then I can just style it once and have it cute for a few days (or, in reality, cute for one day, a ponytail for another, and a hat for the third).  However, I have a ton of fine hair.  Which means it gets greasy after 48 hours.  Almost to the minute.  If I add in working out or being outside for any length of time in Atlanta between April and October, 48 hours is a stretch.

Screen Shot 2017-05-01 at 9.28.00 AMSo over the years I’ve tried different remedies to stretch out that 48 hours: baby powder (what’s up, high school!), the cheapest dry shampoo in the drug store, a french dry shampoo I bought in Paris, and a couple I found online.  Lately, I’ve been loving Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo.  It’s much lighter than others I’ve tried, and it smells phenomenal!  I’m such a sucker for good smells.

If I use it strategically, I can sometimes make my hair last to 72 hours.  But just to get technical, you should be lifting your hair in sections and spraying it on your roots, holding the can 6 inches away from your head.  I once watched a girl just swirl dry shampoo around her head like hairspray.  Um, what.  I guess that would help to give your hair texture, but is completely unhelpful when trying to ward off the day 3 hair grease.

What about you?  How long can you go between hair washes?  And to be clear- I don’t mean between showering, just washing you hair!  I promise, Nick.

  1. Jane,
You HAVE to try a cleansing conditioner. It’s something I’ve been doing for just a few weeks now, and I’m down to about 2 shampoos per week (thought I could probably do 1 shampoo ever 5-6 days). I use all of my usual hair products for styling, and my hair feels healthier, has more volume, and has better shine to is. I’ve been using this brand because it’s available at Target: https://www.renpure.com/product-category/cleansing-conditioners/
    Hope you’re well!
